Eventization, spectacle society and design – these were the topics of 2013 Design FH JOANNEUM Lecture Days at Designmonat Graz. Ulrich Fuchs, the man who paved the way for Linz and Marseille to become European Capitals of Culture, held the opening speech on evening of may 14. Next morning his report of the making of Cultural Capital Marseille-Provence was followed by an introduction by head of BISDATO Karl Stocker, who too is head of departments “Exhibition Design” and “Information Design” at FH JOANNEUM, discussing some theoretical aspects of the general issue of the symposium. Tibor Uhrín, head of design at Technical University Košice, talked about the European Capital of Culture 2013 Košice and showed us concrete projects he and his students realised in this context. Then Jörg Suermann analyzed his international platform for contemporary product design DMY in Berlin, which has established itself to an organization which curates design exhibitions all over the world, and the native Austrian Ulrike Koller, an architect and scenographer at Triad in Berlin, gave us insights about her design of the successful theme pavilion “Urban Planet” at the Shanghai Expo 2010. Last but not least performed Rupert Lehofer from Theater im Bahnhof “Important at the end”.

Buchpräsentation in Saint-Étienne

IMG_2787

From march 14 till 17 we were visiting the International Design Biennale Saint-Étienne, and this really was a strong impression. 5.000 people were participating at the opening ceremony, so one can imagine, that design in Saint-Étienne is quite popular. Highlights for us were the international symposium, exhibition & Pecha Kucha “EmpathiCITY, Making our City Together”, but also the different meetings with the people of the UNESCO City of Design network. Last but not least I had the honor to present my new book The Power of Design. A Journey through the 11 UNESCO Cities of Design.
